To
the very many who completed a You Count! 2007 Employee
Survey, we extend our sincere thanks.
The 2007 You Count!
Employee Survey has now ended, and
the results are in
(read summary below). We thank you for your very important
support and participation. We ended the survey with input from more
than 7,200 UTMB employees working in Galveston and across the state,
an impressive participation rate of more than 61%. We appreciate
hearing what you had to say from Watson Wyatt, the survey
administrator, to learning from and responding to your suggestions,
and to sharing the overview of the results with the campus
community.
We held the drawing for
the cruise or cash equivalent at the UTMB Community Forum, on
March 19
in Levin Hall. Our congratulations to Ludwik K. Branski,
a research fellow and promising young investigator working on burns
in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Branski, once the shock and
surprise wore off, opted to take the cash, and said it was the first
time in his life he'd won anything like this.
Thank you again for sharing your ideas
and opinions.

You Count! Survey: 2007
results speak to tumultuous year--and bright future--at UTMB
In February 2007, UTMB once again
reached out to faculty and staff with the You Count! Employee
Survey. The response was again impressive, with 7,259 individuals
participating in the survey and sharing their ideas and opinions.
The 61 percent participation rate is the second highest ever. It
yields good and useful information to be used by
leadership---including the university’s incoming president, Dr.
David Callender. The survey’s results are important and continue
being carefully reviewed and considered as decisions and plans are
put together for the coming months and years.
Although the You Count! survey was
launched in 2001, the 2007 survey was notable on many fronts. For
the first time, the survey was delivered entirely online, increasing
overall efficiency and data reliability. Correctional Managed Care
units had an outstanding participation rate of 81 percent, up from
64 percent in 2006. New questions were added, including ones
focusing on issues of diversity that had encouraging results,
suggesting UTMB employees feel they are treated with respect by
their colleagues, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or
religion.
However, the past year was a bumpy
one for UTMB, and the scores in some areas bore this out, validating
that You Count! accurately captures the collective campus climate.
The overall employee satisfaction rate for 2007 came in at 66
percent, a slight dip from 67 percent last year. Confidence in
top-level leadership—previously very high—stumbled, not surprising
or unexpected given some of last year’s changes and challenges, but
still unwelcome news. There was also an unfortunate decline in how
employees felt about their ability/willingness to voice ideas or
suggestions. These and other dips are issues being studied with an
eye to improvement.
There was also plenty of good news.
Based on Watson Wyatt’s (the surveying agency) Work USA study, in
the majority of survey areas, UTMB remains above national norms.
UTMB employees generally rated their supervisors favorably and most
employees believe their supervisor holds them accountable. Also, the
sense of teamwork within and among departments at UTMB is still well
above national norms.
Area-specific results are available
within the UTMB entities, and the hope is those results are being
shared and that colleagues within areas are working together to
continue making UTMB a great place to work. A
detailed overall
institutional report is online.
Thank you to all employees who shared
their opinions and ideas during the 2007 employee survey. The survey
returns in 2008; if you have ideas on how to make the survey better
or easier, or how to further increase participation, please send
your thoughts to youcount.hr@utmb.edu.
