Dr. Easwaran Variyam is a Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Internal Medicine at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston. Dr. Variyam earned his MBBS degree in 1964 from the Medical College, Calicut (Kozhikode), Kerala, India graduating at the top of his class and then completed a rotating internship. He did his internship training in Internal Medicine at the District of Columbia General Hospital in Washington, DC. and his Internal Medicine residency training at the Mount Sinai Medical Center - Chicago Medical School in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Variyam completed fellowship training in Gastroenterology at the University Hospitals and Veterans Administration Medical Center, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, Ohio. He previously held academic positions at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

Dr. Variyam is Board Certified in Gastroenterology. He is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American Association for the Study of Liver Disease, American College of Physicians, Southern Society for Clinical Investigation, American Federation for Medical Research, and Society of Microbial Ecology and Diseases. His major research interest focuses on the role of normal gut bacteria as host defense against Entamoeba histolytica.
