Dr. Mark Holden graduated from the UTMB School of Medicine in 1985, and completed his internship in Internal Medicine in San Antonio. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at UTMB. He joined the UTMB Internal Medicine faculty in 1988, becoming actively involved as a clinician educator. He subsequently completed a faculty development fellowship focusing on education at Michigan State University.

The Houston native contributed to the education of many students and residents in Internal Medicine and he directed four courses at UTMB, including Practice of Medicine 2, Great Syndromes, and Renal, Fluids, and Electrolytes. After being selected as a scholar in the McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine, Dr. Holden organized the implementation of the Osler Student Societies at UTMB in 2006.

Dr. Holden was recognized for his clinical skills, bedside teaching, and curriculum development, and was a founding member of The University of Texas Academy of Health Science Education. He served as the Vice Chair for Undergraduate and Continuing Medical Education for the Department of Internal Medicine and Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine.

In 2011, Dr. Holden was inducted into the Academy of Master Teachers.
