Shawn Nishi, MDAssociate Professor

Dr. Nishi is an Associate Professor and the Fellowship Program Director of Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Interventional Pulmonologist and a member of Sepsis Quality team at UTMB, Director of Bronchoscopy & Advanced Pulmonary Procedures, member of the Academy of Master Teachers and member of Quality Improvement in the Department of Internal Medicine.

She is trained in Clinical Safety & Effectiveness, physician leadership and Quality. She has received several local and regional awards for improving quality of care for septic patients at our institution by reducing our sepsis related mortality from 39% in 2011 to 12% in 2013. This work has helped her understand how to apply clinical safety and effectiveness skills while also understanding their limitations in conducting a quality improvement project. She has mentored numerous residents, fellows and faculty members on use of quality tools to improve patient safety and care in various realms at UTMB. More recently, implementing APACHE scoring for our MICU patients to assist in assessing prognosis of our septic patients rather than reliance on University Hospitals and Clinics use of expected mortality which do not incorporate physiologic variables. Her clinical and research interests in sepsis, COPD and lung cancer are combined with quality and patient safety.
