Meet Mrs. Avis Phillips! She is 95 years young! Mrs. Avis loves the UTMB Alumni Field House staff and credits this facility (staff and members) to her continued health and breast cancer recovery. When she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2010 at the age of 85, the staff at MD Anderson was surprised at her health and strength through her surgery and recovery. The Field House staff know her by name and check on her when she has missed a few days. “That is motivation enough for me, I am truly blessed, and God is watching over me everyday and has been all my life. He is so good to me.” One of her many hobbies is exercising and motivating people to “keep on moving and don’t give up.” Mrs. Avis is a widowed, mother of 6 children, 3 boys and 3 girls. She became a Licensed Vocational Nurse in 1954 after attending nursing school at UTMB. She worked at UTMB in Medical Surgery & Neurology and retired in 1987. Mrs. Avis enjoys gardening, National Night Out, and is a Neighborhood Watch organizer. We are honored to have you as a member Mrs. Avis!
