Joris Van Ouystel, MSc, MA, PhD

Joris Van Ouytsel holds a master’s degree in Dutch literature and Linguistics from the University of Antwerp, and completed his second master’s degree in Communication Sciences at the University of Leuven in 2014. Since October 2015, his research has been funded by an FWO Fellowship (FWO-aspirant). His Belgian mentors are Drs. Michel Walrave and Koen Ponnet. As a Fulbright grantee, Joris conducted research under the supervision of Jeff Temple, PhD at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX from October 2016 through January 2017 and continues as an associate member of BHAR.

Joris focuses his research on the influence of digital media on relationship experiences and sexuality among adolescents. More specifically, he investigates the role of sexting, the exchange of self-made sexually explicit pictures, and cyber dating abuse, the use of digital media within romantic relationship to control or harass a romantic partner. Next to publications in scientific journals, he also communicates his research to a broad audience. Joris hold talks on a regular basis about his studies for parents, teachers, and other practitioners. Moreover, he publishes his findings in popular scientific books and magazines.
