Data Curation for Rehabilitation Research and Related Clinical Trials (Fort Collins, CO) - June 12-13, 2018

Sponsored by the Archive of Data on Disability to Enable Policy and research (ADDEP). Co-sponsored by the Center for Large Data Research and Data Sharing in Rehabilitation (CLDR), Rehabilitation Research Resource to Enhance Clinical Trials (REACT), Medical Rehabilitation Research Resource (MR3) Network, and Department of Occupational Therapy - Colorado State University.

What is data curation? This two-day workshop is for any individual interested or actively engaged in preparing data, including clinical trial data, for sharing and reuse among those involved in rehabilitation and disability outcomes research. Data curation includes the steps taken to ensure that research data can be used by secondary users long into the future. Increasingly, federal agencies are asking researchers and projects they fund to ensure the data produced are accessible to others. This workshop will provide practical training for how best to accomplish this goal.

Workshop participants will learn how to plan, review, clean, document, and disseminate data, including clinical trial data and data containing disclosure risks. Emphasis will be placed on hands-on exercises demonstrating curation practices as well as discussion with others in the workshop. Workshop participants can expect to leave with knowledge and experience of how to plan, assess, improve, and disseminate data for long-term preservation and access. Individuals who have collected or plan to collect their own data will benefit most from this workshop.

Expanding your toolkit: How can you use data science to streamline your research and tackle bigger questions?

Advancing the field of neurorehabilitation requires researchers to collectively gather, store, manage, and analyze vast amounts of data. These data take many forms including medical imaging, clinical assessments, electronic health records, or even wearable devices. In this roundtable, we want to discuss how to modernize your data “ecosystem” in-line with the NIH’s “Strategic Plan for Data Science” (including advanced data storage, management, and analysis methods).

Discussion Questions: How can I leverage electronic data collection and management tools to make my projects more efficient? How can advanced statistical models bring a closer correspondence between my theory and choice of analysis? How can we use databases more efficiently to pool data longitudinally or across study sites?

This session will highlight secondary data resources available for rehabilitation research. Researchers and archivists will demonstrate the process of accessing and analyzing archived data from the Boston RISE study, a community-based prospective cohort study on mobility and disability in older adults.
