F-1 Visa Information
Students who wish to attend UTMB on an F-1 visa should work directly with Enrollment Services to obtain the I-20 form necessary to apply for the visa.
Once the following criteria have been met, an I-20 can be issued to the applicant:
- The applicant must be accepted as a degree-seeking student by one of the UTMB schools and submit all official credentials.
- The applicant must submit an official score report providing evidence of a minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL (213 on the computer-based exam) or 6.5 on the IELTS, if the applicant’s tertiary work has been completed at international institutions.
- The applicant must provide satisfactory evidence of financial support. The amount of financial support considered to be adequate for each 12-month period is listed below and is subject to change. Students attending on an F-1 visa are not eligible to pay in-state tuition unless they have a UTMB graduate assistantship. Estimated cost for each 12-month period is listed below. These amounts are only estimates and are subject to change.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REQUIRED TO MAINTAIN F-1 STATUS
F-1 students are required to be enrolled full-time for every semester at UTMB. Full-time enrollment for undergraduate programs is 12 hours and for graduate programs is 9 hours. The only exception is during a student's final semester they can be enrolled less than full-time in order to complete degree requirements. This is a federal regulation and there are no exceptions to this rule.
Each international student should have at least $2,500 (U.S.) in available funds upon arrival at UTMB, because the student must secure housing, have funds for other essentials, and pay registration tuition and fees.
All students wishing to attend UTMB on an F-1 visa should familiarize themselves with the information on the U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website at http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis.
