What is networking for career building?

Networking is a vital aspect of building a successful career in medicine. But what is it? The essence of networking is about connecting and building relationships with a goal of sharing resources. Your network can help define, accelerate and improve the efficiency for reaching your goals. Cultivating your network is an active process. For some individuals, networking provides a platform to overcome barriers by creating a more inclusive and supportive environment.

Importance of Networking

  • Building Connections for Growth: While it’s important to network among your peers and colleagues, don’t be afraid to try and reach out to thought leaders in your field. These connections can insights that contribute to personal and professional growth.
  • Career Advancement: Networking opens doors to various prospects you may be unaware such as research collaborations, speaking engagements, leadership roles, and career advancements. Building a strong network can lead to exciting opportunities that may not be advertised publicly.

Why network?

Utilize your network to learn about job openings, grants, and development opportunities/resources to enhance your chances of success.

  • Referrals and Recommendations: Your connections may enhance your professional credibility. They may serve as your letter writers for promotion, references for upcoming positions, or open doors to opportunities not yet considered.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Networking enables healthcare professionals to connect with individuals from diverse specialties, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations. These collaborations facilitate innovative approaches to patient care, research, and to addressing complex medical challenges.
  • Enhancing Visibility: Building a strong professional network magnifies your visibility by raises awareness about you and your work. This can lead to recognition, invitations to conferences, and collaboration opportunities, ultimately bolstering your career trajectory.
  • Mentorship: Networking facilitates the identification of mentors and mentees who can offer guidance and support. Look to these persons to provide perspective and to help navigate your career transitions.
  • Supportive community: Connecting with a supportive community can provide motivation to overcome obstacles, fosters a sense of belonging amongst like-minded individuals with similar experiences.

Tips for networking

  1. Attend Conferences and Professional Events: Actively participate in conferences, seminars, and workshops related to your field of interest.
  2. Join Professional Organizations and Serve: Join relevant professional organizations and online platforms of your interest. Participate in their events, forums, and discussion groups to connect with others.
  3. Utilize Social Media (SoMe): Leverage SoMe platforms expand your network (LinkedIn, Twitter, and professional blogs).
  4. Maintain Relationships: Building a network is not just about making initial connections; it requires nurturing and maintaining relationships. Regularly follow up with contacts, offer assistance, and stay connected through professional updates and occasional meetings.

PRO TIP – Snap a picture with your network members.

Some relationships have less frequent contact, or you connected during a very busy or large occasion . When reaching out, include your picture with a subtle reminder of the venue and the value of your connection. 

Final thoughts: Be conscious and active in your network. Nurture your relationships. Challenge yourself to take every opportunity to network. Never underestimate whom you may come in contact and how your paths may (eventually) intersect again.
