Department of Family Medicine

 

Karen Schlag, PhD, is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch. She is also an affiliated researcher with the Center for Violence Prevention at UTMB. Her program of research includes interpersonal communication with a focus on strategies to promote well-being, resilience, empathy, and support. Currently, she is the lead evaluator of the Causeway Galveston Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Initiative within the Galveston Independent School District. Dr. Schlag has also conducted research in areas of family healthcare decision-making, support and coping, and family relationship maintenance in times of crisis. Her research has been published in national journals, including the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Dr. Schlag earned her doctorate in communication studies from the University of Texas at Austin, a master’s degree in media studies from Penn State University, and bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Houston.
