Family Medicine & Community Health Represented at 2nd Annual AHA & UTMB Health Cardiovascular Symposium

On Saturday May 30, 2026 The American Heart Association in partnership with UTMB Health's Cardiovascular Department hosted the Second Annual Cardiovascular Symposium at the San Luis Resort Spa and Conference Center.  The day was packed with impactful lectures and a poster session.  UTMB Health's Family Medicine & Community Health (FMCH) Department Chair, Kendall M. Campbell served as one of the symposiums moderators in Session 1 and presented a lectured titled Considerations for Optimizing Cardiovascular Health in Marginalized Populations.  FMCH was also represented by faculty members Syed Azhar, MD, MBA and Jonathan Teran, MD, CAQSM.  

Master's Students Paulina Alcocer and Oscar Almaraz, with the UTMB Health School of Public and Population Health in collaboration with Dr. Campbell and the Primary Care Center for Galveston Island Whole Health and FMCH presented a poster titled Cardiovascular Health Disparities in Galveston, Texas: A District-Level Analysis of Life's Essential 8 and Social Vulnerability to Guide Primary Care Team Allocation.  Their presentation received a third-place award.  This is a great accomplishment by the Primary Care Center and their inaugural presentation.
