A Personal Note from Dr. Ben-Okoli
I was born in Houston, but I was raised in Lagos, Nigeria. I attended primary and boarding school in Nigeria and moved back to Houston in 2006 for college. I attended Baylor university, Waco, Texas, where I majored in Biology. After college, I worked as a private tutor in Houston and also worked as a Customer Care supervisor for an outsourcing company for Sprint. I then attended UTMB Galveston for medical school.
In medical school, I enjoyed all my 3rd and 4th year rotations and had a difficult time figuring out a career path until I worked in the department of Family Medicine. I was drawn to the well-rounded nature of the specialty and to the family-like and collaborative work environment that I observed between the staff and their patients.
In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, playing video games, Basketball, Racquetball and Latin dancing.
In my years in Galveston as a medical student, I fell in love with the calm, fun and vibrant nature of the city. It was not a difficult task choosing to return back to Galveston for residency!
