A PERSONAL NOTE FROM DR. SHAGHAGHI
Hello and Welcome! I am a native Houstonian, and I am so
grateful to be at UTMB for my residency training. I grew up coming to Galveston
on the weekends with my family and exploring the island with friends as a
teenager. I had close relatives that worked at UTMB and I knew what an integral
role the system played in providing care for the community and surrounding
areas. With that said, I am very excited to be a part of such a wonderful
institution!
I attended the University of Texas at Austin for my
undergraduate studies, where I studied Biology along with completing a
certificate in Business Foundations. During this time, I was able to volunteer
in free clinics and provide healthcare to the underserved and homeless
populations in Austin. Along with community outreach, I served as the
Advertising Director for my pre-med honor society. My role was to assist in
recruiting physicians and healthcare professionals to provide career insight
and guidance for pre-med students. Listening to family medicine physicians,
alongside volunteering, helped solidify my desire to pursue primary care. I was
intrigued by the diversity of the field and involvement with patients of all
age groups.
After completing my Bachelor’s, I decided to stay in Austin and work
as a scribe in an allergy and immunology clinic. I worked with both DO’s, MD’s
and mid-level providers. This increased my exposure to the variety of styles
and techniques of healthcare professionals and encouraged me to pursue a
Master’s degree in Medical Sciences at UNTHSC in Fort Worth, Texas. After my
Master’s, I was accepted into medical school at Burrell College of Osteopathic
Medicine in Las Cruces, NM. Living in one of the top 3 states with the highest
poverty rate, I witnessed firsthand the lack of resources and coverage
available to the population. Requiring physicians and health care systems to
adjust to the resources and means they had available. I transitioned to El
Paso, TX for my clinical rotations in medical school. Here I was exposed to rural
and border health problems. Along with high poverty rate and limited resources,
barriers included linguistic/cultural differences, shortage of healthcare
providers, and lack of insurance with immigrant patients. This exposure
increasingly grew my desires for family medicine as I could directly provide
primary care to these individuals. However, after being away from family for
>10 years, I knew I wanted to be close to home for residency. Therefore, I
am so happy to be at a supportive program such as UTMB with a wide diversity of
patients and pathologies and excellent attending physicians!
My interests are broad focusing on primary care in all aspects.
However, I am interested in preventative health, global health, dermatology,
and academic medicine. I am grateful to be at UTMB where I have gotten
excellent exposure to many of these fields in just a few short months in my
first year of residency!
