Expanding Hand Surgery Services for All Ages

Through innovative treatment options that relieve pain and restore function, hand and wrist surgery can improve quality of life for patients of all ages.

BaiJing (Jing) Qin, MD, a new member of UTMB’s Plastic Surgery team specializing in hand and wrist procedures, knows this well. She is excited to add her skillset to UTMB’s current roster of orthopedic and plastic surgeons who offer expertise and solutions for patients experiencing hand and wrist disorders.

“In addition to what's already offered, my added expertise will be in pediatric and congenital hand surgery. However, I cover all age groups, including the elderly,” Dr. Qin says.

Dr. Qin earned her medical degree with Cum Laude distinction at Boston University School of Medicine. She completed her Plastic Surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical School/UMass Memorial Medical Center, serving as chief resident and receiving several in-service awards.

She went on to additional training with a fellowship in Hand and Microsurgery at New York University Department of Plastic Surgery. There she had the unique opportunity to learn from and work alongside some of the nation’s foremost plastic surgeons. At NYU, she was part of the team that performed the world’s first successful face and double hand transplant, a story that made news worldwide in 2021.

Now, she is looking forward to applying the full spectrum of her knowledge and experience to enhance patient care at UTMB.

“I really like to treat arthritis and offer joint replacement for the hand,” she says, naming CMC (thumb) arthroplasty, MCP (joint) arthroplasty, and nerve surgery among her specializations.

However, the hand and wrist problems she treats encompasses a much wider range of pathologies, including carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, arthritis, fractures, De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, ganglion cyst, mucous cyst, Dupuytren’s contracture, tendon injury, nerve injury, pain, sprain, stiffness, weakness, paralysis, and deformity.

Dr. Qin’s arrival also represents an opportunity to expand UTMB’s patient base for hand surgery. She sees pediatric patients for congenital and traumatic hand disorders, and she is well versed in the special needs of children versus adults.

Having utilized the full scope of her plastic surgery training in private practice before joining UTMB, Dr. Qin also hopes to apply her experience to provide additional cosmetic services.

She is skilled in hand rejuvenation techniques, using fat taken from elsewhere in the body and other non-invasive procedures to give the hands a fuller, more youthful appearance. It is a newer treatment that is not currently available at UTMB, and she hopes her skills in this realm will open the door to patients interested in this therapy.

For her current services, Dr. Qin is now seeing patients at UTMB Health Plastic Surgery Clinics.
