Three physicians in the operating room train on the HoLEP procedure

Advancing Urologic Care with a Cutting-Edge Solution

At UTMB, the Division of Urology is dedicated to enhancing patient care through a blend of regional expertise and pioneering techniques. With a focus on delivering high-quality, comprehensive urologic services, the division’s faculty is committed to advancing the field and improving patient outcomes.

Dr. Bilal Farhan, Associate Professor at UTMB, emphasizes the importance of minimally invasive procedures in reducing discomfort and improving recovery times.

“Our goal is to be at the forefront of urological care, education, and research,” Dr. Farhan states. “We are continually expanding our expertise in minimally invasive techniques.”

A prime example of this commitment is Dr. Farhan’s recent introduction of the Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). A common condition affecting men over 50, BPH involves an enlarged prostate that can lead to difficult urination and other urinary issues. While HoLEP itself is not new, its rise in popularity reflects a broader trend towards less invasive surgical options.

Dr. Farhan highlights the benefits of HoLEP: “This procedure is considered the gold standard for treating BPH due to its effectiveness and convenience compared to open surgery. It offers a high patient satisfaction rate and improved quality of life.”

Notably, HoLEP can be performed while the patient is on anticoagulation and generally requires only a short recovery period, with the catheter typically in place for just 24 to 48 hours.

In addition to Dr. Farhan, Dr. Laith Alzweri has also begun offering HoLEP, expanding its availability across Clear Lake, League City, and Angleton. This increased accessibility is a significant advantage for UTMB patients, as few other locations in the Houston area offer this advanced procedure.

UTMB is also committed to the future of urological care through education and training. Dr. Farhan recently led a comprehensive training course on HoLEP, including didactic, simulation, and live case education, ensuring that the next generation of urologists is well-prepared with the latest advancements.

“We are constantly evolving our curriculum to incorporate new technologies and techniques,” Dr. Farhan says. “Our aim is to ensure our trainees and patients benefit from the most effective and innovative treatments available.”

UTMB’s Division of Urology continues to set the standard for excellence in urologic care, with a clear focus on improving patient outcomes through cutting-edge procedures and comprehensive education.
