The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) is pleased to highlight alumnus Qiang Shen, MD, PhD. Dr. Shen received his MD from Kunming Medical University in China and enrolled in the Cell Biology Graduate Program at the University of Texas
Medical Branch (UTMB) in 1995. He earned his PhD in 2001
under the mentorship of Dr. Pomila Singh. He subsequently
completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Powel Brown in breast cancer biology and prevention at the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center at Baylor College of Medicine.
In 2009, Dr. Shen was recruited to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Clinical Cancer Prevention. He was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2017. Dr. Shen’s research interests include breast cancer development, prevention, metabolism, metastasis, therapeutic resistance, and anti-cancer drug development. His research has been supported by numerous funding agencies including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Defense (DOD), the American Cancer Society (ACS), and the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Dr. Shen has authored/co-authored 67 peer-reviewed publications and is an inventor/
co-inventor of three international/US patents/applications.
Dr. Shen has trained more than 20 students and scholars since 2009, including postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, visiting scholars, and summer research students. Dr. Shen serves as a regular and ad-hoc reviewer in the study sections of NIH/NCI, DOD, and other agencies, as a member of more than ten editorial boards, and as a reviewer for over 60 journals. He is also a faculty member at the UTHealth Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences for the Cancer Biology and Therapeutics & Pharmacology programs. Dr. Shen’s scientific and professional achievements have been recognized by numerous awards and prestigious honors including the Breast Cancer SPORE Program’s Career Development Award, the NIH/NCI K22 Transition Career Award, the ACS Research Scholar Award, and the DOD Breast Cancer Research Program Breakthrough Award. Dr. Shen is currently being recruited as a full professor to Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans in the Stanley S. Scott Cancer Center, School of Medicine.
