February has always been a special month for me. Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, is my mom’s birthday, and this year will be her first heavenly birthday.
There is no doubt this will be hard for our family. But comfort lies in knowing that wherever she is, she is happy. That is how my mom always was.
One important thing to know about my mom is that she was a nurse. She had such passion, dedication, love and devotion for her patients. I was fortunate to grow up and be able to witness such caring and kindness, and I work very hard to be like her.
When I started my nursing career, I discovered how challenging it would be. Always moving, always giving, always exhausted. I remembered my mom and all the talks we had about how many people were worse off than us and we should be grateful for all we have.
I quickly decided I needed to change my mindset. I remembered my mom’s words and I chose to focus on gratitude.
I do this by starting each day focusing my energy and being thankful for all I have. I am also mindful of all my family, friends and coworkers I am fortunate to have. Each day I strive to be kind, compassionate and show grace in all interactions. That’s important because you never know what a person is going through. A smile and a hello could change someone’s day.
I enjoy helping people. Whether it is through physical labor, volunteering my time or donating money to a cause. Helping others makes me feel good.
I have chosen to stay at UTMB my entire career because I see compassion, kindness, hard work and genuine love in the people who work here. Your dedication to your patients, families and others is awe inspiring.
In February, as always, I say thank you for all you do each day. I recognize the work is not easy, and I am grateful and honored to work with each of you.
Sincerely
Dr. Josette Armendariz-Batiste
