When did you start work at UTMB?

Feb. 20, 2023

What does your job entail?

I work in outpatient cardiac rehab, which is a supervised exercise program for patients who have undergone a cardiac event or procedure. We provide guidance and education on exercise, diet, medications, smoking cessation and stress management. Here at UTMB, our program is certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

What do you like most about your job?

I love seeing the patients make progress throughout the program and watching them gain confidence post-cardiac event/procedure. I enjoy getting to know each one of them and hearing about their life experiences.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

Not knowing how the patient is doing once they graduate from the program. I get to see them every day for 12 to 18 weeks and then they graduate. I can only hope I taught them everything they need to live a heart-healthy lifestyle and that they continue to make the necessary changes.

What led you to a position in health care?

I love helping people, and this job allows me the opportunity to do so. It's very rewarding getting to know and work with these patients.

Who are your heroes?

My parents are my heroes because they showed my siblings and I what hard work and dedication is. They have always wanted us to pursue higher education, and they gave us opportunities they were not able to have.

Where do you see your career path taking you?

I hope to stay at UTMB for a long time, possibly working on research again in the future or obtaining another degree. I'm excited to see what the future holds!

What do you do in your spare time?

I am always up for adventure and like to explore new things!

What is the best advice you ever got?

"Be kind always.” You never know what someone else is going through and how your kindness will affect them.

What is your favorite quote?

"Do small things with great Love" —Mother Teresa

What three words best describe you?

Compassionate, determined and kind.

What is the coolest thing – or just a fun fact – about you?

A fun fact about me is I am part of 8% of Latinas with a master’s degree. Another fun fact is that throughout my experience I have had the pleasure of working with patients ages 5 to 95 years old!
