Leadership Moment with Dr. Jochen Reiser

Season’s greetings, my friends! Welcome to the latest edition of our Health System Heartbeat newsletter.

It has been more than a month since I announced an organizational restructuring that has taken place across UTMB.

This restructuring has created a more integrative model and removes the traditional silos that often hinder communication and collaboration across an institution. It is meant not only to continue UTMB's long tradition of excellence but to enhance it—to improve health today by working more holistically on behalf of those who entrust us with their care, to prepare proactively for the future of medicine by offering a more immersive experience for our students and to deepen UTMB's impact on the medical field around the world through heightened creativity, innovation and research.

If you haven't had a chance to review the changes or you would like to go over the specifics again, you can do so here. You can see the updated organizational chart here.

As part of the change, UTMB also officially announced innovation as our fourth pillar—joining—clinical care, education and research—as our mission areas across the organization. Each, on its own, is critically important. But none stands alone when it comes to an institution like UTMB and the difference we can make to the communities we directly serve and beyond.

I know that big change like this can be disconcerting for some. Responsibilities can change, routines are sometimes disrupted, and both personal and professional relationships can be affected. If you’d like to learn more about these recent changes, I encourage you to reach out to your supervisor or someone in executive leadership who can answer your questions on this topic.

Since my arrival as president, I have met so many fantastic members of the UTMB family across the institution—from dedicated educators and their eager students, to brilliant researchers, to compassionate and professional providers and other patient-facing staff. I have seen your commitment, I've seen your resilience, and I've seen your determination to bring forth the very best care, education and research in UTMB's name.

Thank you for your continued dedication to our institution, our mission and to the people, families and communities we serve and will serve, and the lives we'll change and save on our campuses, in our clinics and well beyond.

And again, wishing you all safe, happy and healthy holidays and a bountiful new year.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jochen Reiser
