Lifestyle Medicine

This presentation will introduce the key concepts of Lifestyle Medicine. Essential  factors are related to motivation and sustainable change, lifestyle-related health factors, and will address essential aspects of health promotion and prevention. These are nutrition, physical fitness, stress management, sleep, mood, injury reduction, medications and supplements.

Victor S. Sierpina, MD, ABFM, ABIHM, is the Director of the UTMB Medical Student Education Program, a WD and Laura Nell Nicholson Family Professor of Integrative Medicine, Professor of Family Medicine and a University of Texas Distinguished Teaching Professor.

Aging and Wellness: Ways Science Can Help

Aging. We all do it and there's no escape. Can scientists help us to age more gracefully? Can we hold on to our mobility, independence and wellness until the philosophers come up with a good exit plan? A panel of faculty from the UTMB Sealy Center on Aging will discuss these questions and more.

The moderator will be Rodger Marion, Ph.D. He has several roles: UTMB Distinguished Teaching Professor; Senior Fellow, Sealy Center on Aging; Professor Emeritus of Humanities and Basic Science, UTMB School of Health Professions and Adjunct Professor, School of Biomedical Informatics, UTHSC Houston.  Also, on the panel is Tony DiNuzzo, Ph.D. He is an Assistant Professor and Director of the East Texas Geriatric Education Center and Rebecca Galloway, PhD an Assistant Professor and Director of Clinical Education, UTMB Physical Therapy Department and Fellow of the Sealy Center on Aging. Panelist Bronia Michejenko, RN, MSN, GNP is a Clinical Educator in the Department of Internal Medicine, Geriatirc Medicine.

How Environmental Hormone Impersonators
Disrupt Signaling in your Cells

Dr. Watson will talk about how chemicals in consumer products and the environment and can mimic hormones imperfectly (disrupting the normal balance of hormone actions in humans and animals), and then discuss ways scientists and the public can support solutions to this problem.

Dr. Watson is a Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.  She is a research expert in the various mechanisms by which steroid hormones (and other chemicals that imperfectly mimic them) act in cells. She studies these effects in both normal and cancer cells from breast, prostate, pituitary, the nervous system, and the immune system. She has worked independently in this field for over 25 years since completing her PhD and postdoctoral training. She has authored over 100 scientific papers, and has organized, chaired, and spoken in many scientific programs and symposia. She teaches the cell biology of protein targeting and endocrinology to MD and PhD students, and directs the research training of PhD students. Her exploration of novel teaching methods to reach both professional students and the general public on these topics have resulted in development of various 3D aids, such as this Second Life presentation.
