John Stonestreet, PhDThe UTMB Health Institute for the Medical Humanities is pleased to welcome John Stonestreet, PhD as a Visiting Scholar. Dr. Stonestreet will be in residence from January 1, 2016 through June 30, 2016.

Dr. Stonestreet earned a doctorate from the Ohio University Individual Interdisciplinary Program. During the course of his doctoral studies, he dipped his toes into health services research, medical sociology, philosophy of art, philosophy of medicine, theology, spiritual health, healthcare innovation, and the theory and practice of health communication. He attempted to bring his gleanings from these diverse fields together to analyze an auto-ethnographic account of a case study from his own clinical experience in his dissertation entitled Mythological Epistemology for Health Communication.

Dr. Stonestreet earned a Master of Divinity from St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies with a concentration in Rhetoric from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also completed the Clinical Chaplaincy Residency program at Duke University Medical Center, the professional training in Integrative Health Coaching at Duke Integrative Medicine, earned a certification as a Master Trainer of shared decision making from the Association for Healthcare Quality and Research, and trained in Palliative Care at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Stonestreet plans to begin the Supervisory Education Program in Clinical Pastoral Education at Baycare Health System in Tampa Bay, Florida. Baycare Health works in partnership with the country's largest non-profit hospice. After completing the program, John hopes to use the spiritual orientation, family systems theory, and conversation analysis aspects of CPE to play some role in helping to train a wide variety of clinicians and patient advocates in navigating the communicative aspects of end-of-life healthcare decision making.

While in residence at IMH, Dt. Stonestreet will be working to complete his first book project.
