About Us

The Oncology Fellowship Program at UTMB is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)

The overall goal of the Oncology Fellowship Program is to make internists into specialists in Oncology by equipping them with requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential for them to demonstrate competence in patient care, knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, systems-based practice, professionalism, and interpersonal and communication skills relevant to the specialty of Oncology.

The program consists of six core competencies, each with their own goal and competencies, which are evaluated during this two year program. These core competencies include patient care, medical knowledge, practice based-learning and improvement, system based practice, professionalism and interpersonal and communication skills.

General Information

Rotations change every four weeks, and begin on Mondays.

Rotations are divided into direct patient care months and electives. Direct patient care rotations include the in-patient hematology/oncology service, the out-patient clinic, and the hematology and oncology consult services. Electives are requested by the fellows and may consist of subspecialty clinic, consultative service, research, or other electives that may be approved. Requests must be submitted as a proposal explaining the research, after initial consultation with the fellow's faculty mentor. All research electives must be approved by the program director. Other electives not described in the core curriculum must be approved and presented in a similar manner.

This schedule is intended to be sufficiently flexible so that changes can be made to accommodate special needs of trainees, to allow for vacations (two weeks per year), and to allow for travel to professional meetings as approved by the Program Director.
