AccrualNet LifecycleAccrual is the process of enrolling patients for a clinical trial. For an overview of clinical trial accrual, view the AccrualNet™ Protocol Accrual Lifecycle.

Lack of clinical trial accrual was the most common reason for cancer clinical trial failure in a study of cancer trials registered at from 2006-2011.1 Decisions in the design and implementation of clinical trials should maximize the possibility that sufficient patients can be enrolled to complete the study.

One key role for informatics in the clinical trial process is the determination of whether or not a sufficient patient population is available for recruitment. That is, is a clinical trial feasible given the available recruitment pool? We currently offer clinical trial feasibility studies for clinical trials that can help determine the availability of patient population meeting your study criteria. We can help you refine study criteria to maximize recruitment while maintaining internal validity.

Informatics for Integrating Bench to Bedside (i2b2) provides de-identified data and summary statistics on the UTMB patient population. For instances where i2b2 is not sufficient, ITS informatics works closely with Clinical Data Management to develop queries that directly query the UTMB Epic EMR. Both services can be provided as preparatory to research activities that do not require IRB approval.
