2018 Visiting Osler Scholar – Jon K. Crispin, The Willard Suitcases
The John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine welcomes their 2018 Visiting Osler Scholar, Jon K. Crispin (www.joncrispin.com) to UTMB, January 15-18, 2018. Mr. Crispin has been a full-time, self-employed photographer since 1974, dividing his time between regular freelance assignments and longer-term photo documentary projects. He has exhibited his photographs extensively in museums and galleries.
He is currently working on a documentation of suitcases left behind by patients at the Willard Asylum in Willard, NY. In 1869, New York State opened the Willard Asylum for those in need of long-term hospitalization. The institution closed in 1995 and upon the cleanup, over four hundred suitcases belonging to formally “chronically insane” patients were discovered. (www.willardsuitcases.com) His objective throughout this project is to maintain a respect for the integrity of the residents’ lives, and he is determined to tell their stories through his photos.
All of our events featuring his work are free and open to the public. To view the full itinerary, log-on to: https://www.utmb.edu/osler/Activities/VisitingScholar. We look forward to seeing you there!
