Mentoring Matters Symposium - March 30

Please join UTMB's Institute for Translational Sciences for an informative, dynamic discussion about mentorship best practices, common challenges associated with mentorship and preparing for successful careers in the diverse scientific research field.

9:00-10:00: Seminar: Best practices for graduate student and postdoctoral fellow mentoring

10:00-12:00: Breakout panel discussions (45 minutes each; each will run twice to allow attendees to participate in one or both discussions)

a.     Common problems with graduate student and postdoctoral mentoring

                                                    i.     Finding good matches between mentors and mentees

                                                  ii.     Understanding how cultural differences affect mentoring relationships

                                                 iii.     Differing styles of supervision for students, postdocs, technicians, etc.

                                                 iv.     Communication issues: authorship, time management, expectations, scientific ethics, etc.

b.     Preparing students and postdoctoral fellows for diverse scientific careers
