| Specimen Requirements: | Paired slides should be made for each needle pass. One slide should be immediately placed into 95% ethanol, the other air-dried and placed in dry slide container. Needle should then be rinsed in approximately 1 to 2 ml of saline and submitted in suitable container. |

| Clinical Indication: | Detection of abnormal cells and malignant cells. Please note that if requesting Cytology to perform FNA procedure, place consult order in EPIC and call the FNA service phone at 409-771-9723 Note: Currently electronic (EPIC) generated FNA consults from outpatient clinics are not automatically received in Cytopathology. Requesting clinician or designated representative must inform laboratory of consult by telephone (409-771-9712). If special studies are required, it is recommended that clinician speak directly to one of the cytopathologists. |
