ORGAN ASPIRATION FNA - CYTOLOGY (CYTO ORGAN ASPIRATION FNA)

Specimen Requirements:

Paired slides should be made for each needle pass. One slide should be immediately placed into 95% ethanol, the other air-dried and placed in dry slide container.  Needle should then be rinsed in approximately 1 to 2 ml of saline and submitted in suitable container.

Container:

95% Ethanol slide container, dry slide container, and small vial for needle rinse material.

Causes for Rejection:

Incomplete and/or improper labeling, insufficient pertinent clinical history, specimen on slide not fixed immediately.

Specimens are accepted Monday-Friday from 8 AM-5 PM (except holidays) at Room 4.610, Clinical Services Wing. After hours specimens should be dropped off at sample managment on the 7th floor CSW

Clinical Indication:

Detection of abnormal cells and malignant cells.  Please note that if requesting Cytology to perform FNA procedure, place consult order in EPIC and call the FNA service phone at 409-771-9723

Note: Currently electronic (EPIC) generated FNA consults from outpatient clinics are not automatically received in Cytopathology. Requesting clinician or designated representative must inform laboratory of consult by telephone (409-771-9712). If special studies are required, it is recommended that clinician speak directly to one of the cytopathologists.

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient. Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually. The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-10 code or its verbal equivalent.
