SPINAL FLUID - CYTOLOGY (CYTO SPINAL FLUID)

Specimen Requirements:

Cells degenerate quickly in CSF. Fresh specimens should be sent immediately to the Cytopathology Laboratory.

Note: please indicate whether sample derives from lumbar puncture, ventricular tap or Ommaya reservoir.

Collection:

If proper specimen identification and information such as collection date/time and collector are not present in order, specimen will either be referred back to medical staff or delayed until information is obtained.

Container:

Lumbar Puncture Kit tube or other well-constructed container with secure lid and sealed plastic bag

Minimum Volume:

1 ml

Storage/Transport:

Fresh specimens should be sent immediately to the Cytopathology Laboratory. Call the laboratory if a delay is anticipated.

Causes for Rejection:

Delayed delivery of fresh specimens, incomplete and/or improper labeling, insufficient pertinent clinical history.

Specimens are accepted Monday-Friday from 8 AM-5 PM (except holidays) at Room 4.610, Clinical Services Wing (CSW). After hours specimens should be dropped off at sample managment on the 7th floor CSW

Clinical Indication:

Detection of abnormal cells and malignant cells pr evidence of infectious/inflammatory process.

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient. Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually. The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-10 code or its verbal equivalent.
