TRANSBRONCHIAL NEEDLE ASPIRATION - CYTOLOGY (CYTO TRANSBRONCHIAL NEEDLE ASPIRATION)

Specimen Requirements:

Paired slide should be made from each needle pass.  One slide should be put in 95% ethanol, one slide should be air-dried and placed into dry slide container, and needle should be flushed with a small amount of saline into suitable container. Pertinent clinical information must be included when ordering. Slides should be labeled in pencil (frosted end) with patient's full name and medical record number.

Causes for Rejection:

Incomplete and/or improper labeling, insufficient pertinent clinical history, specimen not fixed on slide immediately.

Specimens are accepted Monday-Friday from 8 AM-5 PM (except holidays) at Room 4.610, Clinical Services Wing (CSW).  After hours specimens should be dropped off at sample managment on the 7th floor CSW

Detection of abnormal cells and malignant cells

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient. The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-10 code or its verbal equivalent.
