BRONCHIAL BRUSHING - CYTOLOGY (CYTO BRONCHIAL BRUSHING)

Specimen Requirements:

Paired slides should be made.  One slide placed immediately in 95% ethanol bottle and one slide air-dried placed into dry slide container. Pertinent clinical information must be included when ordering.  Slides should be labeled in pencil (frosted end) with patient's full name and medical record number.

Collection:

After each brushing slide is prepared, residual brush material should be scraped into vial containing 2 ml of sterile saline. After final brushing, the bristle end should be snipped off the wire and placed into the vial along with the scraped material.

Causes for Rejection:

Incomplete and/or improper labeling, insufficient pertinent clinical history, specimen on slide not fixed immediately, missing collection information.

Specimens are accepted Monday-Friday from 8 AM-5 PM (except holidays) at Room 4.610, Clinical Services Wing.

After hours specimens should be dropped off at sample managment on the 7th floor CSW

Clinical Indication:

Detection of abnormal cells and malignant cells

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient. Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually. The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-10 code or its verbal equivalent.
