Specimen Requirements:

Collect swab of a specimen from vaginal introitus and anorectum. Cervical specimens are not recommended

Room temperature, refrigerate if transport is delayed

Causes for Rejection:

Improper collection, swabs received more than 72 hours after collection. Specimen container unlabeled or labeled incorrectly. No date and time of collection on requisition form

Reference Range:

No Group B Strep isolated

Turnaround Time:

 2-4 days

Clinical Indication:

Screening culture for the presence of Group B Streptococcus (Streptococcus agalactiae) in pregnant women prior to delivery.

Please note if patient is allergic to Penicillin on the request form. If stated and the culture is positive, additional antibiotic susceptibility tests will be performed.
