Collection:

Lumbar puncture

Container:

7 mL of fluid in Plastic tube with tight-fitting lid.

Minimum Volume:

1 mL of CSF

Storage/Transport:

Delivered to Sample Management immediately of collection.

Specimen Preparation:

Room temperature if analyzed within 15 minutes of collection; if longer, put specimen on ice for up to 30 minutes after collection.   Centrifuge the specimen prior to analysis to remove possible cellular and bacterial contaminants.

Stability:

Room temperature  for 15 minutes; on ice for 30 minutes

Causes for Rejection:

Specimen not delivered to the lab within allotted time.  Specimen too viscous for sampling, incomplete and/or incorrect sample identification, improper storage/transport.
