Specimen Requirements:
Collection:

EDTA (Lavender top tube) or Heparin (Green top tube), or ACD  accepted. 

Container:

EDTA (Lavender top tube) or Heparin (Green top tube), or ACD  accepted. 

Minimum Volume:

+/-10% of stated manufacturer capacity.

Storage/Transport:

Sample should be stored/transported refrigerated at 2-8°C.

Specimen Preparation:

Freezing of blood is not recommended.

Stability:

Red cell G-6-PD is stable in whole blood for one week when refrigerated at 2-8°C.

Causes for Rejection:

Clotted, hemolyzed, collected in wrong tube, improperly stored and/or transported, identification error.

Reference Range:

Normal = normal G6PD activity; no evidence of deficiency. 

Turnaround Time:

5 days. Testing performed two days per week. Specimens submitted after 9am on testing days will be analyzed with the next scheduled batch.

Methodology:

Spot Fluorescence using modification of Beutler revised method.

Performed:

Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at Sample Management, CSW 7.412.
