Specimen Requirements:

Special instructions:

Tissue should be trimmed to 1-2 mm3 and immersed in fixative which is 10x volume of specimen.  Deliver speicmen immediately to Surgical Pathology Gross Groom, 4.414, Clinical Services Wing.  MUST be refrigerated.  Electronic orders must be submitted through Beaker and must include the specimen source, clinical history and diagnosis.    

Test Included:

Study of tissue morphology for diagnositc purposes.

Collection:

Surgical excision, punch biopsy, brush biopsy, endoscopy biopsy, needle biopsy, curettage, fine needle aspiration, routine venipuncture.

Container:

Prefilled vials are provided by Surgical Pathology Gross Room, 4.414, Clinical Services Wing.

Minimum Volume:

Tissue: 1-2 pieces, 1-2 mm; Peripheral blood: 5ml.

Storage/Transport:

Small pieces of tissue (1-2 mm) should be placed in fixative of 2% glutaraldehyde plus 2% paraformaldehyde or Zamboni fixative immediately after rmoval from patient.  Fixative may be obtained from Surgical Pathology Gross Room 4.414, Clinical Services Wing. 

Causes for Rejection:

Orders not placed in Beaker, inappropriately handled specimen (see storage), insufficient identification, contaminated container.
