Specimen Requirements:

Collect Eswab from infected site avoiding superficial skin flora.




Room temperature, refrigerate if transport is delayed

Specimen Preparation:



48 hours

Causes for Rejection:

Improper collection, swabs received more than 72 hours after collection. Specimen container unlabeled or labeled incorrectly. No date and time of collection on requisition form.

Reference Range:

No organisms isolated, or only Genital flora isolated.

Turnaround Time:

3-4 days


Culture for the isolation of potential pathogens.

Clinical Indication:

Suspected infection with GC, Group B Strep or Staphylococcus from male or  female genital sites.

Patient Preparation :

Female - vaginal, cervical, endocervical or other genital site.

Male - urethra, penis

For the detection of Neisseria gonorrhea, the GC Amplified Assay test is recommended (refer to GC Amplified Assay). If Group B Streptococcus is the only bacteria this order reflects, request C GBS (Group B Strep screen).

This laboratory does not routinely culture for Gardnerella vaginalis or Haemophilus ducreyi.

Refer to other tests in the LTD for information on other potential pathogens from these body sites.
