Specimen Requirements:
Collection:

Use sterile rayon, foam, polyester or flocked flexible-shaft NP swabs to collect a nasopharyngeal sample.

Container:

The NP swab must be placed in a clean, unused BD Vacutainer yellow-top no additive 10 mL plastic tube labeled with patient information.        

Storage/Transport:

The laboratory must receive sample within 90 minutes of collection.   

Storage:  Store tightly capped at room temperature (15-30°C) for up to two hours prior to testing. Ensure the swab fits securely in the tube and the cap is tightly closed.

Causes for Rejection:
  • Specimens received in the laboratory greater than 90 minutes post-collection.
  • Swabs placed in Viral Transported Media
  • Unacceptable swab types (refer to “Collection” section of this document for acceptable swab types)

Turnaround Time:

Performed 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.  Testing is performed within 2 hours of collection and receipt into lab.

A rapid molecular in vitro diagnostic test intended for the qualitative detection of nucleic acid from the SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA in nasopharyngeal (NP) from individuals who are suspected of COVID-19.
