Specimen Requirements:

Collect swab of a specimen from vaginal introtius and anorectum.

Minimum Volume:

One Swab


Room temperature; refrigerate if transport is delayed.


Room temperature up to 24 hours. Refrigerate (2-8°C) up to 48 hours.

Causes for Rejection:

Improper collection, swabs received outside stability requirements, unlabeled specimen container or labeled incorrectly, no date and time of collection on the requisition form.

Batch testing is performed daily. Swabs are placed in a broth and must incubate overnight before test is performed.

Clinical Indication:

Screening test for the presence of Group B Streptococcus (Streptococcus agalactiae) in pregnant women prior to delivery.
