BODY FLUID CELL COUNT (LAB000626) | |
---|---|
Test Mnemonic: | BFCOUNT
Specimen Requirements: |
Cereberospinal fluid (CSF), Serous (Pleural, Pericardial, Peritoneal), Synovial, Broncheal Alveolar Lavage (BAL) miscellaneous body fluids
Collection: | Sterile tube; EDTA (Lavender-top tube) if viscous or bloody
Container: | Sterile tube; EDTA (Lavender-top tube) if viscous |
Minimum Volume: | 0.5 mL
Storage/Transport: | Body Fluid specimens should be transported at ambient temperature to the lab as soon as possible following collection to minimize cell lysis, cellular degradation and bacterial growth. For best results, deliver to lab within 1 hour. Refrigerated (2-8C) storage is adequate for cell counts and differentials for up to 24 hours.
Specimen Preparation: | Synovial, serous or other bloody fluids should be collected in EDTA tube to prevent clotting. For CSF specimens, tube #3 or #4 should be submitted. If traumatic tap is suspected, cell count is recommneded to also be performed on CSF tube #1 but will only be performed if ordered.
Stability: |
For best results, deliver to lab within 1 hour. For best results, deliver to lab within 1 hour.
Causes for Rejection: | Quantity not sufficient (QNS), specimen >24hours old, specimens too viscous too count, specimen identification error (non-recollectable specimens including body fluids collected via invasive procedure may be processed if a Specimen Labeling Error Release Form is completed.
Reference Range: | By report (reports may vary based on specimen source and test method)
Turnaround Time: | STAT: 1 hour; Routine: 8 hours
Methodology: | Manual Hemocytometry and Manual Microscopy for hypocellular specimens, CSF, BAL and other non-serous, non-synovial fluids. For Serous and Synovial samples with sufficient volume and cellularity, the WBC is measured using flow cytometry, and the RBC is measured using electronic resistance detection enhanced by hydrodynamic focusing.
Performed: | Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at Sample Management, 7.412 CSW
Clinical Indication: | Examination of the numerical and/or morphological findings in the body fluid are useful in the diagnosis of disease states, such as meningitis, hemorrhage, malignancy, inflammation, viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections
CPT 4 Code: | 89051

Note: | Specify site/source explicitly.

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient. Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually. The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-10 code or its verbal equivalent. |
