Specimen Requirements:
Collection:

EDTA (Lavender-top tube). Lab may request additional sodium citrate/blue top tube as needed for pseudothrombocytopenia.

Container:

EDTA (Lavender-top tube)

Minimum Volume:

Tubes should be filled to at least 90% of the stated tube volume. 

Storage/Transport:

Room Temperature 8 hours .  If testing cannot be completed  with in 8 hours sample must be refrigerated. Deliver specimens from patients with history of pseudothrombocytopenia to the lab as soon as possible after collection.

Stability:

Stable Refrigerated for 48 hours.

Causes for Rejection:

Clotted or presence of fibrin, QNS (quantity not sufficient/underfilled), overfilled, gross hemolysis, samples drawn above IV line or contaminated with IV fluid, Mislabeled or underlabeled, incorrect storage temperature, stability exceeded, incorrect anticoagulant.

Turnaround Time:

STAT: 1 hour;  Routine: 4 hours

Methodology:

Automated counting of platelets using electronic resistance detection enhanced by hydrodynamic focusing. 

 

Performed:

 Samples are accepted 24 hours per day at Sample Management, CSW 7.412

Clinical Indication:

Monitoring platelet quantity when other Complete Blood Cell (CBC) parameters are not required.
