Specimen Requirements:
Collection:
  • EDTA (Lavender top tube) 
  • Heparin (Sodium or Lithium)
  • ACD tube

fill +/-10% of stated manufacturer capacity.

Container:

EDTA (Lavender top tube) or Heparin (Green top tube), or ACD  accepted. 

Minimum Volume:

1 ml

Storage/Transport:

Sample should be stored/transported refrigerated at 2-8°C.

Specimen Preparation:

Testing is performed on Tuesday and Thursday or Friday. Specimens submitted after 9 am on days of testing will be analyzed with the next scheduled batch.  Freezing of blood is not recommended.

Stability:

Red cell G-6-PD is stable in whole blood for one week when refrigerated at 2-8°C.

Causes for Rejection:

Clotted, hemolyzed, collected in wrong tube, improperly stored and/or transported, identification error.

Reference Range:

Normal = normal G6PD activity; no evidence of deficiency. 

Turnaround Time:

TAT is 5 days from the time of collection or test add-on. Testing performed two days per week ( Tue-Th). Specimens submitted after 9am on testing days will be analyzed with the next scheduled batch.

Spot Fluorescence using modification of Beutler revised method.
