Specimen Requirements:
Collection:

3 mL of blood in a purple-topped K2-EDTA vacutainer tube.

Container:

Purple-topped K2-EDTA.

Minimum Volume:

3 mL of blood

Storage/Transport:

Delivered to Sample Management (CSW 7.412) within 2 hours of collection.

Specimen Preparation:

Centrifuge to separate plasma from cells wihtin 2 hours of collection.  Transfer plasma from purple-topped tube to the labeled transport tube.

Stability:

Room temperature: 24 hours

Refrigerate: upto 3 days

Frozen for 9 months

Causes for Rejection:

Grossly hemolysed, lipemic, or microbiologically contaminated samples should not be used.  Samples with abnormally elevated hemoglobin levels or bilirubin.

By report (reports may vary based on instrumentation, patient age and sex).
