Specimen Requirements:
Collection:

Routine venipuncture

Preferred: Green-topped (lithium heparin) tube; Acceptable: Lavender top (EDTA);  Vacutainer should be filled to minimize dilution from anticoagulants.  Invert tube 3 times to mix contents.    

Storage/Transport:

Delivered to Sample Management within 2 hours of collection.

Specimen Preparation:

Centrifuge to separate plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection.  Transfer plasma from vacutainer tube to labeled plastic transport tube.

Stability:

Refrigerated for ≤ 1 week.

Causes for Rejection:

Incomplete and/or incorrect sample identification, improper storage/transport, gross hemolysis

Reference Range:

<5 mg/dL

Turnaround Time:

Routine 8 hours, ASAP: 4 hours, STAT: 1 hour
