Specimen Requirements:
Collection:

Whole blood collected in a heparinized syringe or lithium heparin tube.    

Container:

 heparinized syringe or lithium heparin tube.    

Storage/Transport:

 

 

Whole blood delivered to Sample Management immediately after collection.  Refrigerated or frozen plasma delivered to Sample Management within 10 hours of collection.

Specimen Preparation:

 

Room temperature if analyzed within 15 minutes of collection; if longer, put specimen on ice for up to 30 minutes after collection. 

For specimen that cannot be delivered to Sample Management immediately after collection, centrifuge the specimen and remove plasma from cells within 15 minutes after collection.  Place plasma into a labeled plastic transport tube.  Place transport tube on ice or refrigerate.

Stability:

 

Whole blood at room temperature for 15 minutes; On ice for 30 minutes.  Plasma refrigerated or frozen ≤ 36 hours.

Causes for Rejection:

Clotted; blood leaking from syringe; syringes with needles attached; specimens not delivered to the lab within allotted time; incomplete and/or incorrect sample identification and improper storage/transport.
