Specimen Requirements:
Collection:

10 mL of Random, fresh urine specimen.

Urine specimen cup

Minimum Volume:

4 mL of urine

Storage/Transport:

Delivered to Sample Management within 1 hour of collection.  Protect from light.

Specimen Preparation:

Refrigerate specimen within 1 hour of collection.  Protect from light.

Stability:

Refrigerated ≤ 24 hours.

Causes for Rejection:

Specimen not protected from light. Specimen contaminated with feces, specimen collected in container with a preservative, specimen received in the lab more than 24 hours after collection, incomplete and/or incorrect sample identification, and improper storage/transport.

By report (reports may vary based on instrumentation, patient age and sex).

Note:

 

Bilirubin is rapidly decomposed once excreted, particularly in the presence of light or heat. Urine preservatives do not prevent this decomposition. Therefore, if a fresh specimen cannot be brought to the lab promptly, refrigerate the specimen immediately at 2-8°C and protect from light.     

 

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient. Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually. The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-10 code or its verbal equivalent.
