24-hour Urine - Discard early morning specimen; start timing from this point. Collect all urine for the next 24 hours, including sample voided at the same time the next morning. Note the time of the last collection on the request form. 2 liter brown plastic jug or glass tube without any additives.

Random Specimen - 10 mL yellow topped tube or plastic specimen cup with tight-fitting lid. (Min: 7 mL of urine)

Minimum Volume:

7 mL of urine


Refrigerated until delivered to Sample Management.

Specimen Preparation:


All samples should be stored refrigerated during collection and until delivered to the laboratory.



Room Temperature for ≤6 hours, Refrigerated for ≤2 days, Frozen for ≤6 months. (Avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles).       

Causes for Rejection:

Specimen collected in container with preservative, incomplete and/or incorrect sample identification, improper storage/transport.
