Specimen Requirements:
Collection:

Blood is collected by routine venipuncture, kept at body temperature, and tube delivered to the laboratory by hand within 30 minutes of collection.  Preferred: 7mL of blood in SST (gel barrier) tube; Acceptable: Red-topped tube. (Min.: 3mL ).

Storage/Transport:

Prompt delivery to Sample Management within 30 minutes.

Specimen Preparation:

Sample must be kept at body temperature (37°C); deliver to the laboratory within 30 minutes of collection. Lab must be notified prior to collection. Once receiving in the laboratory, place blood sample in a 37°C water bath for one hour to allow the clot to retract. Store refrigerated at 2-8°C until analysis can be completed.

Stability:

Refrigerated for ≤ 4 days.

Causes for Rejection:

Specimen not deliver at the correct temperature, incomplete and/or incorrect sample identification, improper storage/transport, and lipemia.
