Fungus Culture, Bone Marrow (088-0014)

Specimen Requirements:
Collection:

Use a syringe to collect 1-5 ml of bone marrow aspirate before it clots or collect a biopsy sample

Container:

Myco/F lytic blood culture bottle or sterile container

Minimum Volume:

1 ml of aspirate

Storage/Transport:

Room temperature. Do not refrigerate.

Specimen Preparation:

 Inject aspirate in the alcohol-cleaned Myco/F lytic blood culture vial. Place biopsy in sterile container.

Stability:

48 hours

Causes for Rejection:

Refrigerated bottles, insufficient quantity, incorrect collection, clotted samples.

Specimen container unlabeled or labeled incorrectly. No date and time of collection on requisition form.

KOH prep is not routinely performed on these specimen types due to low sensitivity.  Antifungal susceptibility is performed when yeast is isolated.

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient. Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually. The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-10 code or its verbal equivalent.
