FROZEN SECTION (98331)

Special Instructions:

1. Submit FRESH only, absolutely no fixative or saline.

2. Patient's chart is required.

3. Contact Surgical Pathology when frozen section is pending and/or specimen requires opening.

4. Surgical Pathology fellow/resident is available for intra-operative consultation.

Test Included:

Tissue removed in surgery for STAT diagnosis.  Gross and microscopic examination with diagnosis.

Collection:

Surgical excision.

Container:

Clean container of sufficient size to support the tissue.

Storage/Transport:

Specimen must be ordered through EPIC/Beaker as a frozen section specimen.  The specimen is collected in a clean container labeled with the patient's first and last names, unit history number and specimen identification. 

Specimen Preparation:

Any tissue, except bone.  Lymph node for metastatic disease or to identify tissue, but not for lymphoma diagnosis.

Causes for Rejection:

Order not submitted in Beaker, insufficient identification, incomplete information, fixative added to sample, contaminated container.

Availability:  Call Surgical Pathology 409-772-2855 when the frozen section sample is ready to be picked up or deliver to 2.186 John Sealy Annex, Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM.  After hours, weekends and holidays must page the on-call staff.
