Specimen Requirements: | A Designated Donation Request form must be signed by the consulting physician, the donor, and the recipient. This form can be obtained and a donation appointment can be scheduled by calling the UTMB Blood Donor Center at 409-772-4861.

Test Included: | The donor will undergo Hemoglobin testing as part of the donation process; the collected unit will undergo all normal blood donation testing, and the recipient must have Type and Crossmatch testing prior to transfusion of the unit(s). |

Storage/Transport: | Unit will be stored in a Blood Bank refrigerator for 7 days after anticipated use or until the designated patient is discharged, whichever comes first. Then the designated unit will be converted to a volunteer donor unit. Red blood cell products expire 42 days after collection and will not be available beyond that expiration date. The patient will incur a charge for directed donor processing even if the unit is not transfused. |

Clinical Indication: | Directed or Designated blood donations are allogenic units voluntarily donated for the use of a specific patient. Appropriate indications for directed or designated allogenic donations may include the requirement for rare blood types, prevention or reduction of alloimmunization, management of complex and multiple antibody problems, religious beliefs, and a history of severe allergic transfusion reactions. Directed or designated donors must meet all allogeneic volunteer donor eligibility criteria and the unit may be transferred to the general blood inventory if it is not used by the designated patient. |
Patient Preparation : | Informed consent must be signed by the patient and the donor; a Designated Donation Request form must be signed by the patient's physician. |
