Goals & Objectives |
GOALS 1.Give students the opportunity to observe the Latin American health care system and the major diseases/medical conditions in Latin America. 2. Provide a framework for understanding the needs of and proper approach to perform research in international medical settings. 3. Provide an environment for students to refine their medical Spanish skills OBJECTIVES Students will: 1.Cultivate cross-cultural communication skills; 2.Understand the importance and complexity of performing research in low-resource settings; 4. Speak Spanish with native Spanish speakers in a health care environment. |
Description of course
activities |
Students will work with Dr. Clinton White prior to their trip to plan their elective. Planning will include selection of Latin American site and preceptor, identification of any additional personal learning objectives, gathering and reading relevant background materials, and making travel arrangements. On site, students will work with selected Latin American organizations to perform pre-determined projects that will be of benefit to the organization. Examples of projects include, but are not limited to, prospective studies of childhood diarrhea, immune responses to human infections and clinical trials in resource limited settings. Additionally, students will have an opportunity to shadow clinicians in hospital and/or clinic wards. |

The students will be required to write a 1-2 page report covering the project or describing an interesting case. The format will be a general introduction, description of work accomplished or the specifics of the case, a summary that includes lessons learned and 3- 5 references from the literature. The report will be due one month after return from the elective. |
