Nicola Abate, MD is Charles C. Sprague, MD Distinguished Professor in Internal Medicine. He is the Director of Endocrinology and Metabolism Division, and Stark Diabetes Center. His main research goal is to identify the role of adipose tissue in the pathogenesis of glucose and lipid metabolism abnormalities. His work on obesity, fat distribution, insulin resistance and dyslipidemia uses an approach inclusive of mechanistic research in cellular and animal models, clinical research and therapeutic intervention. His team identified ethnic differences in fat distribution and the relationships between regional adiposity and glucose/lipid metabolism in patients at risk for insulin resistance, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. They discovered that a common polymorphism of the ENPP1 gene may increase the risk for insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes in non-obese. Their findings led to identify the importance of adipose tissue dysfunction, rather than simply its mass and distribution, in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and its complications.
